At the CWRU Lego Robotics Competition, we sent 4 teams
of students. One of our teams was composed of only one person (Nick S.)
and he won 2nd place at the competition. Our other teams won 5th, 7th
and 9th places out of the 22 teams from various area schools that
participated.

Pictures for the site

If you have any pictures that you've taken of the FIRST robot or any of
the teams, please send them to me so that I can upload them onto the
website. At the event, the two organizers showed us 'Dexter' the robotic vehicle that Case students used in the DARPA Urban Robotics Challenge. This year's Lego Robotics competition will be based on that DARPA challenge. We will be using the new Lego Mindstorms NXT kits as opposed to previous years' competitions that used the older RCX 2.0 robots. While we were told that we can use whatever programming language works, we were given a copy of Labview Data-Flow oriented programming. We were also given one more NXT kit which brings our total number of kits up to 4. This year, we can use (according to Amaury) ANY Lego parts for the robot. We are not limited to a single kit this year. That should give us something to think about.
On a side note, I did notice that Case is sponsoring a FIRST team. They were working on their robot in the same building that they were having the Labview tutorial. The Case sponsored robot looks very similar to ours with a few differences. They have a telescoping system to lift the ball (similar to ours last year) and they have gripping claws as opposed to our basic forklift. They are definitely using the slotted aluminum structural members that we are using. One of their programmers (I'm assuming that he was a programmer) gave us a few pointers on using a 'True-North Sensor'. He said that we might run into problems with it. I'll go into details at our next meeting.

See your name in print!

Remember to send your paragraph about the robotics club to Ms. Scott. mescott@sehs.net. We will be using your constructive comments for an upcoming article in the parent magazine. So far, the following students have done the assignment: Joe Miranda, Jimmy Wagner, Matt Bliss and Ryan Johnson. If you forgot, please take a few minutes and get this done.

Welcome!

Welcome to the St. Edward High School Robotics Blog.
