Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.8 has been released!
Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.8 has been released!
A new version for a new year! Some changes to look for include a reworked Commander explosion (To allow the Commander to be used more aggressively without seeming as unbalanced), 25% increase to KBot firepower, new Repair Nanolathe Turrets, build pictures for all nanolathe turrets now have labels to make them easier to choose at a glance, slower dodging from gunships, remaking the Core Leveler as a more Shodan like mobile defense, Deep Core Mine and Metal Maker rebalancing, increased speed for the static defense lasers, so they're more likely to hit their targets, reworked Jeffy and Weasel as light scout/radar units, and more...
The new version is available as the full version. There is no patch from 1.7 to 1.8.
The full TA:T v1.8 can be downloaded here:

Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.7 has been released!
Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.7 has been released!Sorry for the length of time it took for this to be released. Bigger changes to look for include cheaper wind generators, and a resetting of the base range of advanced units from 50% higher than level 1 to the same as level 1 (Artillery type units usually kept their range, but have reduced damage per shot). This should help larger numbers of level 1 units to fare better against smaller groups of advanced units, thereby helping level 1 units to be useful longer, both alone, and alongside of advanced units.
The new version is available as the full version. There is no patch from 1.6 to 1.7.

Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.6 has been released!
Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.6 has been released!Phew, what was supposed to be just a few short beta tests with a few players ended up spanning more than a year and involving almost all of the online multiplayer player base. I will try and keep future versions just a month or three in between, since I've always been of the opinion that frequent releases help get the best feedback and correction done quickly. The betas were released frequently, but weren't generally posted in the forums or made known on the TA:T web page, leaving many in the dark about them.
Please note that this is the *final* version of v1.6, and therefore supersedes all of the previous "betas" of v1.6 from the past year.
For those of you updating from version 1.5a, this has over a year's worth of changes in it from the beta testing of v1.6. Higher energy costs for advanced units mean they are still powerful, but require a stronger energy infrastructure to effectively use them. Hopefully this will help prevent the "First to advanced tech wins!" race, with superior numbers of weaker but cheaper energy-wise level 1 units able to defeat the advanced but few units someone who has jumped to advanced tech too early will have.
There are also 4 new units (Each available to both Arm and Core):
The AMAT (Multi-unit advanced air transport), able to carry multiple units at once.
The Stargate, which allows single units, or large groups of units to be instantly transported to another stargate, although they do require hefty amounts of energy to keep running.
The Micro Fusion, a small and hastily assembled Fusion Reactor which produces 250 energy. It has few safety interlocks, and therefore building four of them produces the same amount of energy as a Fusion Reactor, while being substantially cheaper (and more dangerous!).
The Deep Core Moho Mine, an advanced Moho Mine able to extract roughly triple the amount of metal per second that a regular Moho Mine can, but at a substantially higher energy cost.
This version also includes the TAMEC 2004 file inside the zip file, in order to simplify things for new people downloading TA:T for the first time, or if they can't download the TAMEC file elsewhere. This does increase the file size roughly 22MB.
The new version is available as the full version. There is no patch from 1.5a to 1.6. Enough changes have been made that the space savings would be reduced quite a bit compared to previous patches.

v1.6 is almost ready
Just a few last things to tidy up (With a release of a beta 10), and then the finalized version of v1.6 should be ready to release. I'm really sorry it's taken so long, but hopefully the results will be worth the wait. Incidentally, I'll try to avoid such a long time between releases next time, if possible.-Twilight

v1.6 Beta testing...
I've opened up v1.6 to beta testing as I make incremental changes before the final release, and it's been very helpful to get quick feedback on balance or have bugs spotted. We're on Beta 4 at the moment, with Beta 5 ready for release today or tomorrow. I'm hoping to release 1.6 Final in the next week or two, depending on the feedback, any bugs or other issues that crop up, etc.
Feel free to ask on the forums about the Beta, and please give feedback after you use it. Remember, though that this is just a beta, and that remaining issues should be resolved for the v1.6 final release, which will also contain a full changelog of all adjustments, additions, and so forth.
We've also had a lot more people joining us on Messenger to play online, and some of the battles have been very memorable. Speaking of which, I'd like to set up a repository for demo recordings, so people can upload their favorite Total Annihilation: Twilight game, review someone else's, watch a replay of the latest tournament championship games, or just have fun browsing through the listings. Thanks for making TA:T such a great mod and a great way to play Total Annihilation with other people after all these years!

New version in the works
The new version to replace TA:T version 1.5a, which will be 1.51 or 1.6, depending on how many changes end up in it, is being worked on. I always need feedback, of course, but I'm reminding you and requesting it in this thread:
http://www.tauniverse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38129
Also, our group of people who play TA:T multiplayer online together has been growing, and this list includes some of the newer additions, to whom we bid a hearty welcome!

It's never too late to come join in the fun of a battle to the finish!

Unit Compendium updated
I've updated the Unit Compendium section again. Previously, only the level 1 units had been completed. I have now added in the descriptions for all of the level 1 factories, the hovercraft platform and all hovercraft, and all advanced aircraft (Including seaplanes) and corresponding factories. Still remaining to be done are the advanced KBots, advanced vehicles, advanced navy, mechs, and advanced tech structures.

Update: Oops! In replacing the factory pages with pages with descriptions, I forgot that they have no links, just the description, so I inadvertently blocked the easy way of selecting units by clicking on their pictures under the build menu for each factory. I'll have to put the build menus back in, but for now, I have just put back the original factory pages with no descriptions. The non-factory units should still have descriptions as mentioned above. Sorry about that...

Strategy and Tactics section added
I've updated the site with the new Strategy and Tactics section. While it is still very much a work in progress, like much of this site, the rough version of the General Strategic Overview is finished and up: Also a work in progress, I've tried to give a fairly abstract look at the different phases of the game, and strategic decisions that are encountered as you reach them.
Additionally, I welcome strategies and tactics submissions from players, ranging from simple tips to far-reaching and complex plans. Feel free to post them to this thread in the Forums. Thanks!

TA:T Website updated with the Unit Compendium (incomplete)
I've updated the site with the Unit Compendium, which is a sort of Unit Guide that contains a paragraph or so on each unit and structure, giving a brief overview and list of some tactics and capabilities for it. This is intended to help ease learning about the units and what they do for newer players, and to perhaps show something more advanced players may have overlooked previously. It's incomplete, since I've only gotten the level 1 structures and units done (Not including the Commanders and the factories), but I will be updating it as I get more finished. You can get to it by clicking here, or by clicking on the entry in the site menu above.

TA:T Website updated with new sections
I've updated the site a bit with a new menu and pages for learning About TA:T, Downloads, Installation, and the Forums . I'm working on a large Unit Compendium that lists every unit/structure and a paragraph briefly describing it, so as to help newer players get up to speed more quickly and perhaps point out something new they didn't know to older players. Since it's such a large project, I'll probably start putting it up in pieces as I get them done. Thanks for your patience.

Total Annihilation: Twilight v1.5a has been released!
Why a new version just a few days after 1.5 was released? I apparently goofed up. More specifically:
From the TA:T 1.5a changelog:
NOTE: This change is to consolidate the Arm and Core Juno units into just one. They were almost identical anyway. The reason is that Total Annihilation: Twilight is running up against the 512 unit limit of the TA engine. As far as I can see, TA:T only had 510 units, and since the TA Demo Recorder adds in a single unit (TADEMO.UFO), that would put it at 511, but I discovered that any multiplayer games recorded as demos in version 1.5 will crash upon trying to replay them, *unless* I removed the TA Demo Recorder unit, so apparently there was a unit limit coming in to play somehow.
I'll do more research and try to find out where the seemingly "extra" unit is coming from, but in the mean time, this new version will have one less unit ID used, and so the replaying of demos shouldn't be an issue. There are more units we can consolidate (Such as the Dragon's Eyes), but for now, this will take care of the immediate problem. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of rendering any saved games (Not recorded demos of multiplayer games, just the saved single player skirmish games) incompatible with the new version. Sorry about the hassle, and thanks for your patience.
I threw in some other goodies as long as I was doing a new version so soon, such as revamping mines and greatly expanding the build menus of the Arm Consul and Core Freaker. Enjoy!
